Sofya Gollan is a PhD candidate at the Australian National University investigating representations of sign language and Deaf characters on contemporary screens. Her research integrates Deaf Critical Theory with Film Studies to interrogate how hearing filmmakers deploy silence and sign language as narrative devices to present Deaf characters as diegetic silence. A bilingual scholar fluent in English and Auslan (Australian Sign Language), with competency in British and American Sign Language, Gollan brings unique insider perspectives to her theoretical work. Her research-creation methodology combines scholarly analysis with creative film practice, informed by her extensive professional background as an award-winning filmmaker. Gollan's documentary "Imagined Touch" received the 2024 AWGIE Award for Best Short Documentary and screened at the Lincoln Centre for Performing Arts NYC, while her digital video work "Threshold" has been exhibited internationally and at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Australia. Her academic interests encompass Deaf studies, horror film theory and the intersections of disability and representation.
