Associate Professor Simone Honikman is a medical doctor (UCT) with clinical experience in paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology and psychiatry and a master's degree in maternal and child health (UCT). She is founder and director of the 20-year-old Perinatal Mental Health Project (PMHP) based at UCT. The project has received formal commendation by the World Health Organization. Simone received the international Ashoka Fellowship for Social Entrepreneurship, collaborates with several international research consortia, and has published academic papers, chapters, editorials and training manuals. She develops mental health programmes integrated into existing maternal and child health services and designs and conducts training for a wider range of healthcare and social service providers and consults to health policy, guideline and programme processes provincially and nationally.
