- Senior Visiting Research Fellow, University of Oxford
In 2018 my most recent book, Burning Up: A Global History of Fossil Fuel Consumption, was published, intended as a contribution to the discussion about the causes of climate change and the transition away from fossil fuels. I worked as a journalist before entering academia as a mature student. My first academic monograph was The Russian Revolution in Retreat, 1920-24, which was based on my PhD, about the labour history of Moscow in the early 1920s. I also wrote a history of Russia during Putin's first two terms in office. In 2008 I was appointed Senior Research Fellow at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies. There I edited two books, and wrote numerous working papers and articles, on natural gas markets in Russia, Ukraine and the Caspian region. In 2017 I moved to work as a visiting fellow, to make more time for my own research.
