Simon Hull studied a BSc in Land Surveying at the University of KwaZulu Natal, graduating in 1997. He then went to the University of Cape Town and completed a MSc in Engineering, working on the application of digital photogrammetry to architecture and archaeology. After completing his articles, he registered as a professional land surveyor with the South African Geomatics Council, but changed tack in 2006 and tried his hand at teaching high school Maths and Science in Ingwavuma, northern KZN. During this time he completed a PGCE through UNISA in 2009. He returned to Cape Town with his family in 2012 and has been lecturing in Geomatics at UCT since then. He completed his PhD on land tenure reform in customary land rights contexts in 2019 and currently chairs a working group of the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG) on land administration education.
