Simon Granovsky-Larsen

Author of Dealing with Peace: The Guatemalan Campesino Movement and the Post-Conflict Neoliberal State (University of Toronto Press, 2019). Co-editor, with Dawn Paley, of Organized Violence: Capitalist Warfare in Latin America (University of Regina Press, 2019).

My research examines social movements and political violence in contemporary Central America, as well as the role of Canadian companies and the federal government in Central American politics. Recent fieldwork in Costa Rica and Panama explored Canadian connections to the green energy transition in the region. Another ongoing project examines the use of counter-insurgent strategy by Canadian mining companies attempting to silence opposition in Guatemala. These and other projects draw from long-standing relationships with civil society organizations in Central America; they revolve around a concern for human rights; and they explore the transnational political, economic, and social processes that tie Canadians with the peoples of Central America.
