Shiva S. Mohan

I am a Research Fellow with the Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) in Migration and Integration program at Toronto Metropolitan University. As a human geographer, my research interests lie at the intersections of migration and mobility studies, island studies, and political geography. My scholarly work is informed by my lived experiences as an islander from Trinidad and Tobago in the Southern Caribbean, and by my personal migration journeys.

My research explores how different territories respond to and manage international migration dynamics, examining the social, legal, economic, and environmental challenges they face. I also seek to understand the difficulties and uncertainties that migrants experience in their journeys and daily lives.

I maintain active research affiliations across multiple institutions. I am a member of the Migration and Development Research Cluster at the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) at The University of the West Indies, Mona, and serve as an Associated Researcher with the Swiss-based Environmental Mobility Research Unit (EMRU), a transdisciplinary collective of practitioners and academics whose work focuses on climate-induced mobilities. Additionally, I am a Board Member and primary reviewer with the Community Research Ethics Office (CREO) in Waterloo, Ontario, and I sit on the Board of Directors of The Canadian Association of Latin American & Caribbean Studies (CALACS).
