- Researcher Tourism Transitions, Inholland University of Applied Sciences
Shirley Nieuwland is an independent researcher and advisor, currently involved with a research project at the University of Applied Sciences InHolland in Rotterdam, on transitional forms of tourism (for example, regenerative tourism, degrowth and doughnut economics in tourism).
After completing her PhD on sustainable tourism in cities at Erasmus University in Rotterdam, Shirley started as a freelance consultant and advisor, working at the intersection of academic research and implementation in practice. She does this through Paradise Found, a platform dedicated to responsible tourism, integrating both social and ecological sustainability. Her focus lies with new and innovative topics that require further development. She aims to translate these topics to the tourism sector and investigate their applicability in practice. This is done through knowledge development and the development of tools that can support the tourism sector in working on a sustainability transition in practice.
