Shiori Shakuto is a Lecturer in Anthropology at the University of Sydney. She is a feminist anthropologist specialising in gender, work and household life in Japan, where she has conducted ethnographic research for more than a decade.
Her book, After Work: Japanese Silver Backpackers in Malaysia, published by the University of Pennsylvania Press in 2025, explores gender, ageing and life after retirement among older Japanese people. Her more recent research examines the gendered dimensions of household waste and plastics in Japan, Australia and Malaysia.
Shiori’s research has been published in journals including American Ethnologist, Japanese Studies, Sociology Compass and Journal of Immigrant and Refugee Studies. Her work has been supported by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Singapore Ministry of Education, Singapore National Research Foundation and UK Natural Environment Research Council.
Before joining the University of Sydney, she was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the National University of Singapore and a Project Assistant Professor at the University of Tokyo.
