Shameran Slewa-Younan

Shameran is an Associate Professor in Mental Health at the School of Medicine, Western Sydney University and Honorary Senior Research Fellow, Centre for Mental Health and Community Wellbeing, Melbourne School of Population and Global Health. University of Melbourne. Shameran is a cross-cultural bilingual psychologist, practising since 2001 when she joined the NSW Transcultural Mental Health Service. She currently practices in Fairfield, Sydney, an area where 69.7% of residents reported using a language other than English according to the 2021 Census. Shameran has a National and International profile as a leading academic on the mental health and wellbeing of refugee and other CaLD groups, with significant teaching, research and translational outputs and impact. In 2018, her academic work was recognised by the Australian Psychological Society (APS) through the ‘Division of General Psychological Practice Significant Contribution Award’. Shameran is passionate about community-driven, engaged research that demonstrates a ‘real’ commitment to improving the mental health outcomes of refugee and other Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CaLD) populations by optimising their interactions with mental health services.
