Sergio Abranches

Sérgio Abranches é bacharel e mestre em sociologia, pela Universidade de Brasília, MA e PhD em ciência política e sociologia comparada, pela Cornell University. Escritor e colunista político dos jornais Estado de Minas e Correio Braziliense, foi professor visitante do Departamento de Ciência Política, DCP/ UFMG; professor visitante no Departamento de Economia e Administração, FEA/UFRJ; professor titular IUPERJ; senior visiting fellow, do Helen Kellog Institute for International Studies/University of Notre Dame; e professor colaborador COPPEAD/UFRJ.

É autor de diversos livros, entre eles "A terceira margem do Ipiranga: Povo, democracia e futuro", pela Companhia das Letras, 2026, "Presidencialismo de coalizão: Raízes e trajetória do modelo político brasileiro", pela Companhia das Letras, de 2018 (finalista do prêmio Jabuti, categoria Ensaio/Humanidades); "A era do imprevisto: A grande transição do século XXI", pela Companhia das Letras, de 2017, ganhador do Prêmio Literário Nacional PEN Clube do Brasil, 2018.

Sérgio Abranches holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in sociology from the University of Brasília, as well as an MA and PhD in political science and comparative sociology from Cornell University. A writer and political columnist for the newspapers *Estado de Minas* and *Correio Braziliense*, he has served as a visiting professor in the Department of Political Science (DCP/UFMG); a visiting professor in the Department of Economics and Business Administration (FEA/UFRJ); a full professor at IUPERJ; a senior visiting fellow at the Helen Kellogg Institute for International Studies at the University of Notre Dame; and an adjunct professor at COPPEAD/UFRJ.

He is the author of several books, including *A terceira margem do Ipiranga: Povo, democracia e futuro* (The Third Bank of the Ipiranga: People, Democracy, and the Future), published by Companhia das Letras in 2026; *Presidencialismo de coalizão: Raízes e trajetória do modelo político brasileiro* (Coalition Presidentialism: Roots and Trajectory of the Brazilian Political Model), published by Companhia das Letras in 2018 (finalist for the Jabuti Award in the Essay/Humanities category); “The Age of the Unforeseen: The Great Transition of the 21st Century,” published by Companhia das Letras in 2017, winner of the PEN Club of Brazil National Literary Award in 2018.
