Sergi Valverde

(He/him)

I research how information evolves, exploring how evolutionary theory extends beyond biology to shape social and technological systems. With a background in computer science and physics, I’ve always been captivated by the principles of evolution and their application to complex systems. As a tenured scientist at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and researcher at the Institute for Evolutionary Biology (IBE), my work focuses on bridging natural and artificial evolution.

By integrating networks, evolution, and complexity science, I aim to develop a robust evolutionary framework—not only to unravel the emergence of complexity in both natural and artificial systems but also to tackle some of today’s most urgent challenges.

I hold a PhD in applied physics from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC, 2006). Before my academic career, I worked as a video game programmer at Ubisoft (1999–2004) and as a software engineer for El Periódico de Catalunya (1996–1999), experiences that continue to inspire my interdisciplinary approach.
