Sarah Hainsworth is the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) at the University of Bath. She was previously Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Executive Dean leading the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences at Aston University. In addition she is a Professor of Materials and Forensic Engineering and a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.
Her research activities fall into four main areas: surface engineering; microstructural evolution in power plant materials; measurement of residual stress in engineering components using neutron diffraction; and forensic engineering, in particular related to knife crime/stabbing and analysis of tool marks on bones. She was part of the team that worked on the remains of Richard III.
She was the recipient of the Andrew H Payne Jr. Special Achievement Award by the Engineering Section of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences 2015; and the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining: Rosenhain Medal in 2008.
