I am Head of the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health within the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at The University of Melbourne. I am also a Laboratory head at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research where my basic and public health research focuses on iron metabolism, red blood cells, and also public health control of anaemia and undernutrition. I am also a consultant haematologist at The Royal Melbourne Hospital, where I diagnose and treat a range of non-malignant blood disorders.
My broader interest encompass in the full breadth of global health, spanning from molecular aspects of inflammation/ iron interactions, through to the broader determinants of health including food security, wealth, dietary practices and culture, and ultimately, the fundamental determinants of health.
