Sangeetha Shyam

Dr Sangeetha Shyam is a Miguel Servet Senior Researcher in Nutritional Epidemiology at IISPV, Spain. She is an elected Fellow of the Nutrition Society of Malaysia. A recipient of the Maria Zambrano Fellowship from Spain (2022-2024), & the Interstellar Initiative Award (2021-2022) for promising early career investigators jointly awarded by the Japanese Academy of Medical Sciences and the New York Academy of Sciences, she was a project team member of the FAO’s World Committee of Food Security High-Level Panel of Experts on Food Security and Nutrition Data Collection Tools and Analysis. Previously, she was a faculty member at the Division of Nutrition and Dietetics and a Fellow at the Institute for Research, Development Innovation (IRDI), International Medical University (IMU), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Her research focuses on evaluating diet-disease relationships to inform dietary guidelines to optimise population health. To do so, she uses a combination of methodological approaches, including the conduct of metabolic studies and randomised clinical trials, analysing observational data and reviewing existing evidence. She has collaborated internationally in leading data-analytical projects to study diet-disease relationships in nationally representative big datasets. An active researcher, she mentors postgraduate students & early career researchers. She is on the editorial board of nutrition journals which specifically support capacity building for early-career researchers and researchers in the Global South. She is a member of the Nutrition Society of Malaysia and the Nutrition Society (UK).
