Dr Samuel Curkpatrick is a McKenie Postdoctoral Fellow in the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music, the University of Melbourne. His research focuses on Australian Indigenous music and philosophical issues of language, epistemology and religion. He was recently Associate Coordinator of the PhD in Indigenous Knowledge at the Indigenous Knowledge Institute, and Research Fellow in the Indigenous Studies Unit, Melbourne School of Population and Global Health.
Dr Curkpatrick completed doctoral studies in ethnomusicology at the National Centre for Indigenous Studies, the Australian National University, and postdoctoral research in theology and philosophy at the University of Divinity. He has worked on music performance and documentation projects with Yolŋu and Warlpiri communities, focusing on issues of collaborative research and the intersection of diverse knowledge traditions.
His books include Singing Bones: Ancestral Creative and Collaboration (Sydney University Press, 2020) and Indigenous Knowledge: Australian Perspectives (Melbourne University Press, 2024).
