Samuel Ajayi

I am currently a reader and consultant physician/nephrologist at the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan and the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria. My duties are teaching, research and clinical services in medicine/nephrology. I teach undergraduates and postgraduates at the hospital and the university. My areas of research are in hypertension and kidney disease, and clinical activities in general medicine and nephrology.

I am a co-investigator of the H3Africa Kidney Research Network project, a multinational study that is elucidating the causes (including genetic) of kidney disease in African populations. This study has a target enrolment of 8,000 subjects across 9 sites in five countries: Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya and Ethiopia and South Africa.

I served as secretary of the Nigerian Association of Nephrology from 2014-2018, and am currently editor of Tropical Journal Nephrology, the flagship journal of the association.

I trained at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria and did postgraduate residency training in medicine/nephrology at the University College Hospital, Ibadan. I took up appointment at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital as consultant physician/nephrologist from 1998-2012. During this period, I participated in training of postgraduate doctors and participated in collaborative research, especially with the Institute of Human Virology, University of Maryland, in overseeing a treatment centre for the PEPFAR programme as site coordinator. I also established one of the first renal programmes at the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. I was an International Society of Nephrology Fellow at the Leicester General Hospital, UK from 2000-2001, and Royal College of Physicians and John Walls Nephrology Fellow in the same hospital in 2006/2007.

My research interests are in hypertensive kidney damage, preventive nephrology, and acute kidney injury.
