Sam Halvorsen is Professor of Human Geography at Queen Mary University of London. Previously, he was visiting scholar at the University of Buenos Aires (2017), a research fellow at the University of Cambridge (2016-2017) and a teaching associate at the University of Sheffield (2015-2016). His research has been funded by the ESRC, British Academy and Leverhulme Trust.

His research examines democracy in Latin American cities, having previously published widely on the Occupy London movement. He has a particular interest in the relationship between territory - the occupation and control of space - and urban politics.

He is chair and founder of the the Latin American Geographies Research Group (LAGRG) and is co-director the Queen Mary Center for Research on Latin America and the Caribbean (CRoLAC).

He is author of Territorializing Democracy: Strategies of Popular Participation in Buenos Aires (2026, University of Georgia Press).
