Sagnik Dey

Prof. Sagnik Dey is the Head and Vipul and Mahesh Chaturvedi Chair Professor in Policy Studies at the Centre for Atmospheric Sciences, IIT Delhi, India. He is Adjunct Professor at the Department of Health, Policy and Management, Korea University, Seoul, South Korea. He is an Associate Faculty of School of Public Policy and Transportation Research and Injury Prevention Centre (TRIPC) at IIT Delhi. He served as Institute Chair Professor from 2019 to 2024 and as Coordinator of the Centre of Excellence for Research on Clean Air (CERCA) from 2019 to 2025.

He received his M. Sc. in Applied Geoscience from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, and M. Tech. and PhD from Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, India. He worked as Postdoctoral Scientist at Department of Atmospheric Sciences, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA before joining IIT Delhi.

His research interests are to understand 'air quality, climate change and health nexus' and 'remote sensing of the Earth's climate system'. He has published more than 190 peer-reviewed research articles. Prof Dey received INSA Young Scientist Medal in 2008, NASI-SCOPUS Young Scientist Award in 2012, Dr. Sudhansu Kumar Banerji MoES outstanding young faculty fellowship for the period 2011-2013, Teaching Excellence Award from IIT Delhi in 2016, and the Fulbright-Nehru Academic and Professional Excellence Fellowship for 2017-18. He has been awarded the prestigious Devendra Lal Memorial Medal for 2024 and inducted as Fellow by the American Geophysical Union.

He is an international collaborator of NASA's MAIA satellite mission and the Global Burden of Disease Study. He is currently an expert member in WHO air quality and health program and co-convener of CAPHER-India network. He has led several international and national projects and worked as a consultant for the World Bank, UNEP and UNDP.
