Professor Saffron O'Neill's research explores the social science dimensions of climate variability and change, particularly focusing on communication and public engagement. Her research specialism is the visual communication of climate change. Much of Saffron's work is co-produced with stakeholders in the media sector. Saffron is Co-Director of C3DS (Centre for Climate Communication and Data Science), which aims to improve strategic communications to deliver meaningful action on climate change.

Saffron is also a Co-Director of ACCESS (Advancing Capacity for Climate and Environment Social Science) funded by the ESRC; and the Co-Director of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) for the Geography department at the University of Exeter. She has held a number of fellowships, including an ESRC Future Research Leader Fellowship (2012-2017) and a Leverhulme Research Fellowship (2021-2023).
