Rosy Boardman

(She/Her)

Dr Rosy Boardman is a Reader (Associate Professor) in Fashion Business at The University of Manchester. Her research investigates how digital technologies, including AI, mobile technologies, and social media platforms, can be designed and managed in retail and marketing to advance social justice and support more sustainable business practices and consumer behaviour.

Her research aligns closely with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, with a central ambition to harness technological innovation to reduce inequalities and contribute to a fairer, greener society. She is one of the UK’s leading academic voices on digital product passports, examining how they should be designed and communicated to consumers to drive sustainable behaviour change, how supplier perspectives can be meaningfully built into them, and how to keep consumers engaged with them over time. Her research directly informs how brands, policymakers, and designers should be approaching DPP implementation.

She also has an interest in consumer behaviour, examining digital marketing and online consumer culture, including how to design more age-inclusive shopping technologies, how AI can be used in marketing in an ethical way, and what interventions are needed to build safer, more inclusive social media environments.

A qualitative researcher and trained eye-tracking specialist, Dr Boardman has published widely in leading peer-reviewed journals such as Psychology & Marketing and Information, Technology & People and is the author of 6 books. Her best-selling textbook ‘Fashion Buying & Merchandising: The Fashion Buyer in a Digital Society’, which focuses on how technology and sustainability have changed the roles, is a core text across international universities and is in its second edition. She has secured competitive research funding from major research councils, including the Leverhulme Trust, and collaborates internationally across academia, industry, and policy.

Her work has informed practice within local companies, global brands, and policy bodies, supporting improvements in social and environmental sustainability. Dr Boardman has supervised 16 postgraduate research students (with 7 to completion) to date and serves as Deputy Editor of the Journal of Fashion Marketing and Management. She holds a PhD in Fashion Management and Marketing and an MSc in International Fashion Retailing, both from The University of Manchester, has a PGCHE and is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA).

Rosy is available for consultancy, industry partnerships and speaking engagements, and welcomes media enquiries from journalists covering fashion, technology, sustainability and digital inclusion. She is actively seeking interdisciplinary research collaborations with academics, brands, policymakers and NGOs. To get in touch, contact her via her University of Manchester staff profile or connect with her on Linkedin.
