Rosanna Rios Perez

(she / her)

Rosanna is an artist working on historical and practice-led research, employing traditional Japanese dyeing methods, katazome and yūzen. After learning these techniques in Kyoto, she focused on developing a corpus of work that used old dyeing methods in a contemporary format.

Although her work crosses different mediums, including installation, textiles, and drawing, she has delved into dyeing as her preferred expression. In recent works, she used rice resist paste (nori) on her body to make unique traces on silk or cotton fabric, which she calls body-kata. By employing this method, she conveys ideas related to the transience of human existence, our impact on the environment, and ancient forms of sacredness informed by Latin American indigenous people's cosmovision.

Her recent publications include developments of textile artists connected to the Mingei movement or folk crafts in Japan during the 20th century.
