I have served as Professor of Aquatic Ecology at University of Waterloo since 1999. My research spans and integrates among fields of paleolimnology, aquatic ecology, hydroecology, environmental assessment and contaminants. Most of my research takes place in water-rich landscapes in northern Canada and addresses concerns about effects of multiple stressors on the hydrology and ecology of lakes. I combine use of spatial surveys, process studies and multi-proxy paleoenvironmental studies to determine effects of natural processes (hydrologic & climatic variability) and human disturbances (river regulation, mining, land use, etc.) on aquatic ecosystems. I integrate this range of approaches, because the ecologically important processes often operate over such a broad range of spatial and temporal scales that their roles cannot be determined by a single methodology.
