Los desiertos de Australia arden, y arden con fuerza, si se deja que se acumule combustible. Este año, los guardabosques indígenas han quemado grandes extensiones de terreno preventivamente para evitarlo.

The 2023 megafires burnt more than 84 million hectares of desert and savannah in northern Australia. That’s larger than the whole of NSW, or more than three times size of the UK.
Deserts in Australia burn – and burn big – if fuel is left to build up. But this year, Indigenous rangers across the deserts have burned huge tracts early to make Country healthier.
Satellite data and traditional know-how combined have drastically reduced fires across northern Australia over the past 20 years.
Fires in arid Australia are extensive, largely unmanaged, often destructive and significantly under-reported.
The extent of this achievement is staggering, almost incomprehensible in a southern Australia context after the summer’s devastating bushfires.
