- Professor emeritus, School of Music and Faculty of Education, Queen's University, Ontario
I am a retired professor of music and music education from Queen's University. My research areas were in music education, feminism, feminist theory, women composers and LGBTQ music.
I originated the Symphony Education Partnership that brought the then-School of Music, then-Frontenac DSB, and Algonquin & Lakeshore RCDSB together to present music lessons to gr 4s, take students to the symphony, and conclude with follow-up lessons. That educational partnership continued for more than 20 years before it devolved into edutainment.
I live in a 19th Century limestone schoolhouse in Camden East. I garden, knit, and support public education, wanting it to be better than it is.
I am active in local politics, as a member of the ONDP, as a social critic who attends school board meetings, and as a union supporter who walks with education workers.
While at QU, I was a principal organizer of Queen's University Faculty Association into a bonafide union. I was on the first contract negotiating team and served in many positions on the union executive.
I served as a co-coordinator of Women's Studies, 1991-1993, before I had tenure. The other co-coordinator was Beverly Baines, Faculty of Law. I taught feminist theory and women in music in this program.
I lobbied successfully, with others, for the inclusion of partner benefits for lesbians & gay men at QU before there was any law requiring them.
