Robert Gildea's interests are in French and European history in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. He has written on the impact of the German occupation in France and Europe during the Second World War and on the French Resistance as a transnational movement.
He has co-edited a book on transnational resistance in Europe 1936-48 and on the Colonial past and the politics of the present in France and GB.
He is currently researching and writing an oral history of the 1984-5 Miners' Strike.
