- Professor of American History, University of Sussex
I've been professor of American History at the University of Sussex since 2007. My work currently focuses on how the bloody Civil War of 1861-65 has been forgotten, remembered and commemorated in the United States over the last 150 years. I'm also writing an essay on the impact of Confederate president Jefferson Davis's death on reconciliation between northerners and southerners in the late nineteenth century. My last book, Secession Winter: When the Union Fell Apart, was co-authored with William Barney and Elizabeth Varon. It was published by Johns Hopkins University Press in 2013.
