Robert A Shellie

Professor Robert A. Shellie is a widely recognised analytical chemist specialising in advanced chromatographic techniques. He has a deep and long-standing engagement with multidimensional gas chromatography, particularly comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC×GC) and its hyphenation with mass spectrometry.

His work bridges the disciplines of food science, flavour and fragrance chemistry, and metabolomics, with a strong emphasis on high-resolution analysis of complex volatile mixtures. He was a pioneer in GC×GC in Australia and was among the earliest adopters and innovators of GC×GC techniques, especially for flavour and essential oil analysis.

Professor Shellie’s research has significantly influenced the development and application of multidimensional separation technologies in both academic and industrial settings. His pioneering research, significant citations, breadth of applications, and several awards place him among Australia’s leading experts in separation science. In 2024 he was listed within the top 0.05% of scholars in gas chromatography worldwide by ScholarGPS (#2 Australia; #29 Worldwide). He is a respected international figure in multidimensional and hyphenated chromatographic techniques.

Professor Shellie has played a pivotal role in advancing science through:

• Development of novel multidimensional separation techniques.

• Application of GC×GC in food, environmental, and forensic sciences.

• Mentorship of postgraduate researchers and collaboration across disciplines.
