A graduate of Cultural Studies at the University of Leeds, Rio holds Masters Degrees in Political Theory (Leeds) and International Law (Bradford), completed his Doctorate at Leeds Beckett University in 2024, researching class, identity and myth in Yorkshire Post-Punk. He is the vocalist for the cult Bradford group 1919, and in 2025 became an inaugral inductee in the Leeds Goth Hall of Fame.
