- Professor of Modern History, University of Exeter
I am an historian of Britain in in its global and imperial context in the period from the late Nineteenth Century to the present day. I am particularly interested in the rhetorical dimensions of politics and economics. I am the author of, amongst other works, Rhetoric: A Very Short Introduction (OUP, 2013), Winston Churchill: A Life in the News (OUP< 2020), and Age of Hope: Labour, 1945, and the Birth of Modern Britain (Bloomsbury, 2023). I am co-host of the podcast Churchill: The Finest Half Hour. Prior to moving to Exeter in 2007 I taught at the universities of Manchester and Cambridge.
