Richard Frankham is affiliated with Macquarie University in Australia and the Australian Museum and has contributed significantly to research in evolutionary genetics and conservation biology. His work broadly spans the fields of genetics and genomics, focusing on genetics-related topics within ecology and biodiversity conservation. He is a leading international figure in conservation genetics having been a pioneer in the field with many highly cited papers and reviews and was senior author of the first textbook in the field. He has been honoured for his contributions in the area.

His main research interests involve genetic management of threatened species of animals and plants, including loss and restoration of genetic diversity, inbreeding depression and the impacts of population fragmentation and climate change.
