Dr Richard Bale is an Associate Professor and Director of Academic Development and Research at the University of Law. Before moving into educational development, he was Head of Modern Languages at Brunel University London. He has also previously worked as a Lecturer in Applied Linguistics at Zurich University of Applied Sciences in Switzerland, and he has taught German, translation and interpreting at the University of Surrey and German Linguistics at the University of Kent. Richard has a PhD in corpus-based interpreter education and language learning, a Masters (MEd) in University Learning and Teaching, a PGCE in Modern Languages, a BSc in Linguistic and International Studies, and he is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA).

Richard's main research interests revolve around educational (learning, teaching and assessment) policy in higher education as well as student-staff partnership working in university settings. He also has interests in the parallels between teaching and performance, intercultural competence and multilingualism in education, student wellbeing, and language learning and applied linguistics.

Richard has published books and textbooks on teaching in higher education, and he is the author and co-author of several peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters.
