Dr. Riccardo Maddalena (He/Him/His) is a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Civil Engineering at Cardiff University, a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), and a Chartered Engineer, Scientist, and Environmentalist. His research focuses on low-carbon cements, self-healing and biomimetic infrastructure materials, and the durability and life cycle assessment of sustainable construction systems. Riccardo's research on waste recycling in cementitious material, the WASTEREBUILT project was the shortlisted for the 2024 sustainable future award of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3). He's currently investigating the use of battery-grade lithium waste as cement replacement in construction. He directs DURALAB, Wales’s first interdisciplinary durability testing facility, and contributes to the RESCOM Research Group and Cardiff Materials Research Network. A strong advocate for equality, diversity, and inclusion in STEMM, he serves as Director of EDI at the School of Engineering and is a proud LGBTQ+ member.
