Reece Alberts is a Professor in Research Unit for environmental Management and Science at the North West University, South Africa. Reece completed his PhD with the topic “An application of Theory of change to EIA system evaluation.” His post graduate research focussed on community and private based conservation initiatives in trans frontier conservation areas together with the application of Theory of Change to environmental policy implementation instruments. His current research focus is on conservation law and policy, conservation philosophy, the effectiveness of conservation instruments and the effectiveness of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) in protected areas. Reece lectures and presents on environmental law and policy including protected areas and conservation law at the NWU. He has published on several topics, including co-operative governance, biodiversity conservation, water resource and waste management as well as EIA effectiveness with specific focus on protected areas. To date he has over 50 academic publications

Reece has strong research networks both nationally and internationally. His research, by implication, is multi-disciplinary, with collaborative work undertaken together with planning professionals, ecologists, environmental scientists and environmental economists.

Reece is also responsible for the development of the NWU’s new masters programme in Environmental Management: Conservation Leadership and Futures Thinking, which was launched in 2022.
