- Lecturer, York St John University
I completed my PhD in Clinical Science and Immunology at the University of Cape Town (UCT), South Africa in 2011. My doctoral thesis focused on understanding the immunology and immunopathogenesis of HIV-tuberculosis associated immune reconstitution syndrome (TB-IRIS). After my doctoral studies, I continued to work as a postdoctoral researcher focussing my research on tuberculosis and working on various aspects of TB, including clinical immunology, mycobacteriology, molecular biology and infectious disease epidemiology.
Following my doctoral studies, I pursued additional training in Public Health, completing a Master's in Public Health at UCT with a focus on infectious disease epidemiology. I have since worked as a senior scientist at several higher education and research institutions in South Africa, including Stellenbosch University and the Human Sciences Research Council. Over the years, my research has transitioned to focus on utilizing novel and innovative molecular approaches to improve the diagnosis and treatment of drug-resistant and drug-sensitive tuberculosis.
More recently, I have accepted a full-time tenure-track academic position as a Lecturer in Biomedical Sciences at York St John University in the United Kingdom, and my current research is on various aspects of sepsis, antimicrobial resistance, and the use of artificial intelligence in improving disease diagnosis.
