I am a historian of Japan with a focus on chanoyu, the Japanese tea ceremony. I am also a practitioner of chanoyu with over 25 years of experience. My book "Cultivating Femininity: Women and Tea Culture in Edo and Meiji Japan" (University of Hawai’i Press, 2018) analyzes privately circulated and commercially published texts to show how chanoyu tea ceremonies for women was understood, articulated and promoted from the 18th century through the early 20th century.

My current research explores early Western encounters with tea ceremonies and matcha at the turn of the 20th century. I have written articles for academic journals, book chapters in edited volumes, and the Oxford Bibliographies of Art History.
