Prof Rajen Govender is currently Professor Extraordinaire at the Institute for Social and Health
Sciences at University of South Africa, Emeritus Associate Professor at the Nelson Mandela School of
Public Governance, University of Cape Town, Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Justice and
Reconciliation, and Senior Advisor to the Afrobarometer Pan-African Network. He holds a
BA(Honours) (Cum Laude) from the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal, a MA in Psychology from New York
University, and an MA and PhD in Social Psychology from University of California, Los Angeles. His
primary research interests are in public health, with a particular focus on HIV/AIDS treatment and
prevention, mortality and morbidity related to road traffic injuries and violence-related injuries. In
addition, he is actively engaged in the fields of democracy and governance, examining the roles of
reconciliation and transitional justice in post-conflict societies. He has produced more than 200
peer-reviewed publications, books, book chapters, commissioned reports, and conference
presentations, and has delivered numerous public seminars both locally and internationally.
