Rachel Gevlin is a Teaching Assistant Professor of English at Virginia Commonwealth University, where she teaches courses on eighteenth-century literature and culture, women's writing (especially Jane Austen), and literary theory. She received her PhD from Duke University in 2020. Her research focuses on the literature and legal history of eighteenth-century England, with particular attention to the history of divorce law and its impact on women. Her current book project explores how the emerging genre of the novel negotiated gender inequality through narratives of adultery, bigamy, and divorce.
