- PhD candidate, Swansea University
I’m currently a third-year PhD researcher at Swansea University, working cross-discipline in linguistics and health science. I apply analytic techniques in linguistics to a problem in health care: look-alike, sound-alike (LASA) drug name confusion errors. I am also an in-house researcher for a science enrichment programme with young people in South Wales.
My experience is varied: I have a background in languages, with degrees in translation and three years setting up and running my own translation company. I’ve also worked freelance as a copy-editor and Italian>English translator. After my MA I worked professionally in higher education for five years as a project manager for a science outreach project; this gave me multiple perspectives of the higher education landscape. Driven by personal interest, I have always steered my research towards medicine, and my current PhD study builds on my MA thesis in 2012.
When I’m not scrolling through thousands drug names, I am playing with my two gorgeous children, attempting to make things with yarn, drinking copious coffees, and getting sand between my toes on a Gower beach.
