Rachael Gross

(she/her)

Yuma! I'm Rachael and I am currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Fenner School of Environment and Society. My expertise lies at the intersection of ecology, society and geography, where I delve into interdisciplinary realms with a focus on fostering political and applied conservation efforts, geospatial land and biodiversity management, and the vital process of decolonisation. Based on Ngunawal and Ngambri Country, I'm deeply committed to honouring and collaborating with mob in my work.

I have a Bachelor of Science with First Class Honours, majoring in biology and with minors in evolution/ecology and biodiversity conservation/management. I received my Ph.D. in interdisciplinary science and environmental management in December 2023. All my studies have taken place at the Australian National University. I have been teaching at a university level since 2019 which has been one of my favourite roles. Throughout my career, I've primarily gravitated towards roles in science communication and outreach, driven by a passion for bridging the gap between academia and broader audiences and between science and society.

My doctoral research epitomised my commitment to exploring the dynamic interplay between environment and society. Armed with a skill set encompassing ecological analyses, GIS, remote sensing, and a nuanced understanding of decolonial research methodologies, I've embarked on a postdoctoral adventure, focusing on applied research initiatives in collaboration with First Nations communities. Together, we navigate the intricacies of landscape conservation, cultural values mapping, and the urgent challenges posed by climate change, both within national borders and on a global scale.

Beyond academia, you will find me outside. Whether tending to my garden, embarking on bushwalking expeditions, or avidly birdwatching, I find fulfillment in being in nature. Most importantly, my favourite birds are magpies! Though black cockatoos, gang gangs and spotted pardalotes are close competitors.
