Raafiah Mussa is a PhD candidate at UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology (University College London), working within the Stroke Research Centre. Her research focuses on stroke in young adults, in particular, investigating risk factors, long-term outcomes and the non-motor effects of stroke such as fatigue, sleep disturbance and impaired social participation.

Her recent work includes a large cohort study of patients aged under 55 admitted to stroke services between 2017–2020. The resulting paper highlights that a majority of young stroke survivors report at least one persistent non-motor issue six months after stroke, even among those deemed to have a favourable functional recovery.

Through her work, she seeks to improve understanding of how stroke affects younger people and help shape better prevention, rehabilitation and long-term care strategies across physical, mental and social recovery.
