Piero Lionello is full professor of Atmospheric Physics and Oceanography, director of the Museum of the Environment at the University of Salento and coordinator of the PhD Programme in “Biological and Environmental Sciences and Technologies”. He is co-coordinator of MedECC (Mediterranean Experts on Environment and Climate Change) and has been the chair of the MedCLIVAR (Mediterranean CLImate Variability) network from 2006 to 2025 . He has played important roles in the international scientific community, as leading author of the “Europe” and “Mediterranean” chapters of IPCC WG2-AR6 (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), coordinator of the special report on coastal risks in the Mediterranean, coordinating lead author of chapter 2 “Drivers of Change” of the 1st Mediterranean Assessment report, both published by the MedECC network (Mediterranean Experts on Climate and Environmental Change). co- coordinator of the HyMeX (Hydrological Mediterranean Experiment) program, and member of the Scientific Council of the European Center for Medium Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF)., Elected President of SISC (Italia Society of Climate Sciences). He has been awarded by the Academy of Lincei the 2024 International prize for astronomy, geodesy and Geophysics. He is author of more than 150 scientific article on climate dynamics, climate change and its impacts, extreme events, synoptic meteorology, marine storms and coastal floods.
