Phillip is a Senior Lecturer in Criminology at the University of New South Wales.
Phillip's research examines the policing and regulation of public leisure as well as the relationship between alcohol and other drugs and violence. He has particularly focused on the night-time economy, music festivals, urban governance and the relationship between the media, crime and policing. He was the joint-winner of the 2019 Australian and New Zealand Society of Criminology's Adam Sutton Crime Prevention award for research impact from his world-first research with Dr Bianca Fileborn and Professor Stephen Tomsen looking at issues of safety and sexual violence occuring at Australian Music Festivals. He is the author of "Policing Nightlife: Security Transgression and Urban Order", which was published with Routledge in 2020, and lead editor of "Navigating Fieldwork in the Social Sciences: Stories of Danger, Risk and Reward", published with Palgrave in 2020. Phillip has published widely in the fields of Criminology, Public Health and Policy and serves on two key nightlife advisory committees with the City of Sydney Council and Randwick City Council.
