Philip Butterss is a Visiting Research Fellow in the School of Humanities, University of Adelaide. "The Original Sentimental Bloke", co-authored with Gary Fearon, appears in the June 2025 issue of the Victorian Historical Journal.

After graduating from the University of Sydney, he taught Australian literature and film in the Department of English at the University of Adelaide for twenty-six years, publishing extensively in Australian cultural history. Edited works include The Penguin Book of Australian Ballads (with Elizabeth Webby), Southwords: Essays on South Australian Writing, and Adelaide: A Literary City.

His monograph An Unsentimental Bloke: The Life and Work of C.J. Dennis won the National Biography Award. He is working on a history of literary Adelaide
