Phebyn Joseph is a Lecturer in the Department of Languages and Cultures at La Trobe University. Her teaching and research are grounded in cultural studies, with a strong focus on questions of gender representation and the critical analysis of media. With nearly a decade of experience in the media industry, she brings unique practical insights to her academic work. Her research critically examines the intersections of representation, identity, and power structures within media content.

Phebyn completed her PhD at Macquarie University (Sydney, Australia). Her thesis, “Negotiating Gendered Colourism in Popular Hindi Cinema: Locating the Agency of Cultural Producers,” is an ethnographic study of the Hindi film industry. It explores how deeply embedded historical legacies, caste prejudices, neoliberal ideologies and contemporary industry practices contribute to the systematic privileging of light-skinned actors. The thesis combines rigorous semiotic and ethnographic analysis with rich interview-based insights and interrogates how creative professionals both sustain and resist colourist norms in Bollywood.

Phebyn completed her Master of Research at Macquarie University with a thesis titled Hindu women devotees and menstrual taboos: gender, agency and religion in the case of the Sabarimala temple (2022). She tutored gender and media production classes at Macquarie University from 2022 to 2025.
