Professor Sherlock is an academic historian active in the cultural history of Renaissance and Reformation Europe, especially practices of remembering and forgetting. He is published in public theology, gender studies, religious history, and Indigenous studies and has professional expertise in higher education and in governance of faith-based organisations.

From 2012-2015 he was a columnist with The Conversation writing on religious issues under the handle Theophilus.

His current role, in collaboration with Professor Stan Grant as Director of Yindyamarra Nguluway at Charles Sturt University, aims to bring Indigenous ways of knowing, being and doing to bear on the challenges and opportunities facing democracy and national life in Australia and beyond.
