Peter Hobbins

Dr Peter Hobbins is Coordinator, Collection Acquisition & Curation at the State Library of NSW and a Research Affiliate in the Discipline of History at the University of Sydney.

As a public historian and curator, Peter's publications have included medical research, venomous creatures, epidemics, quarantine, aviation and maritime history. He is the author of two books, 'Venomous Encounters: Snakes, Vivisection and Scientific Medicine in Colonial Australia' (2017) and, with Dr Ursula K Frederick and Professor Anne Clarke, 'Stories from the Sandstone: Quarantine Inscriptions from Australia's Immigrant Past' (2016). Over 2018-19 Peter led a community history project to mark the centenary of the pneumonic influenza or 'Spanish' flu pandemic, prompting over 70 media appearances during the Covid-19 pandemic. He has previously worked as a heritage consultant, at the National Archives of Australia and the Australian National Maritime Museum.
