Peter Martin is a theoretical astrophysicist undertaking basic research on the gas and dust in the interstellar medium in our Milky Way galaxy, the raw material for new stars, planets, and life forms. He has been a professor at the University of Toronto since 1972, following graduate work as a Commonwealth Scholar at Cambridge. Over the past decade he has worked with international colleagues on the Planck team, leading to the Gruber Cosmology Prize in 2018. He is a Senior Fellow of Massey College. Championing advanced training opportunities for students and postdoctoral fellows, he was instrumental in the establishment of the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics and the Dunlap Institute. He has served as Chair of the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics and as President of the Canadian Astronomical Society, has held visiting appointments in France, the USA, and the UK, and has enjoyed residencies in the Literary Arts Program at the Banff Centre.
