Pedro studied Medicine in Lisbon and Paris before moving to Oxford for his postgraduate training. He obtained a master's in Clinical Embryology with distinction from the University of Oxford, and went on to complete a PhD in Reproductive Medicine with Arri Coomarasamy at the University of Birmingham. Pedro has recently returned to Oxford to work as a Subspecialty Fellow in Reproductive Medicine and an NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, collaborating with the Granne, Becker and Williams groups at NDWRH.

Pedro's research interests lie in evidence synthesis and clinical studies in infertility and miscarriage. He is the national clinical coordinator for the NIHR-funded LOCI randomised trial, which compares letrozole versus clomifene, with or without metformin, for the treatment of anovulatory infertility in people with polycystic ovary syndrome.

At Oxford, Pedro is the teaching associate for Women's and Reproductive Health at Green Templeton College. During his lectureship, Pedro will investigate the role of luteal dysfunction upon placental maladaptation and preeclampsia. In 2023, the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists recognised Dr Melo's research by awarding him with the Florence and William Blair Bell Fellowship.
