Paul Saurette

Paul Saurette is Full Professor at the School of Political Studies, University of Ottawa, where he teaches and researches a wide variety of topics including mixed methods, critical discourse analysis, ideology, rhetoric, political communication, conservative movements, the anti-abortion movement, public law, political ethics, and political philosophy more generally. He is an award-winning researcher (2019 Seymour Martin Lipset Best Book Award; 2016 CPSA Donald Smiley Book Prize; 2014 CPSA John McMenemy Award for best article in CJPS; Finalist 2006 CPSA C.B. Macpherson Award for best book in political theory; SSHRC Standard Grants) and educator (2020 uOttawa recognition for exceptional teaching during COVID-19; Winner of Capital Educators Awards for Teaching Excellence 2009). His most recent book (co-authored with Kelly Gordon) is The Changing Voice of the Anti-Abortion Movement: The Rise of Pro-Woman Rhetoric in Canada and the United States (University of Toronto Press, 2016). His is currently conducting a large-scale Mixed Methods Critical Discourse Analysis (MMCDA) research project that explores the role of emotion, ideological appeals, and populist narratives in contemporary climate change discourse – particularly in newspaper opinion columnists and other contemporary media punditry. He is also working on a practical methodological guide to conduction MMCDA projects, with the goal of making it much easier for students and other researchers to understand and employ this approach in their research.
