Paul Quigley is James I. Robertson, Jr. Professor of Civil War Studies at Virginia Tech, where he also serves as Director of the Center for Humanities and Director of the Virginia Center for Civil War Studies. A native of Manchester, England, he is the author of the prize-winning Shifting Grounds: Nationalism and the American South, 1848-1865. His latest book is The Man Behind the Cane: Preston Brooks, Political Violence, and the Road to Civil War.
